DESIGNING AZ/ NARRATIVE APPAREL & ILLUSTRATION
Designing AZ is a localized apparel design collection that transforms regional pride into wearable art. By translating iconic Arizona landmarks, seasons, and cultural touchstones into high-end illustrations, the project establishes a premium brand identity that resonates with residents. The scope included creating screen-print-ready vector graphics and producing realistic lifestyle mockups for e-commerce and digital marketing.

The primary objective was to develop an apparel brand that appealed to local pride without falling into generic, mass-market tourist tropes. The design system needed to maintain a cohesive brand aesthetic across diverse, isolated themes—ranging from community initiatives like "Keep Tempe Beautiful" to niche holiday celebrations—while ensuring all graphic designs remained functional and legible across various garment colors.

As the lead illustrator and brand designer, I was responsible for the end-to-end creative execution. This included conceptual sketching, vector illustration, typography selection, color palette management for screen-printing, and high-fidelity product visualization for e-commerce marketing.

The visual strategy leveraged geographic and cultural familiarity. I utilized the Arizona state silhouette as a recurring framing device to create a consistent "container" for various illustrative styles. The process involved three distinct pillars:
Historical Research: Analyzing local aesthetics, such as the Hotel Monte Vista and the Mesa Diving Lady neon sign.
Iconographic Development: Utilizing desert flora and environmental realities ("Dry Heat") as core brand assets.
Adaptability Testing: Iterating on designs to ensure they translated seamlessly from digital vector art to physical fabric.

The final collection consists of a stylized, limited-color palette series optimized for professional apparel production. The designs are categorized into:
Landmark Signage: Reimagining historic icons through modern vector illustration.
Seasonal & Event One-Offs: Adapting the core identity for "Irish Arizona," "Phoenix Lights," and "Fall Prickles."
Localized Messaging: Creating "tribal" designs that signal neighborhood allegiance to cities like Tempe, Mesa, and Tucson.

This fragmented, localized approach to merchandise design fostered deeper community engagement than a generalized statewide strategy. By targeting specific neighborhoods and cultural moments, the collection established a "local insider" brand identity, resulting in a versatile library of assets ready for e-commerce scaling and high-volume retail.

This project reinforced the importance of balancing high-detail illustration with the technical constraints of apparel design. I learned that a strong recurring structural element (the state silhouette) allows for immense creative freedom within the artwork while maintaining a unified brand system. Moving forward, this "container" method will be a staple in my approach to multi-asset commercial illustration campaigns.
